Basically, there are 3 levesl of dimensions (views) on challenge coins, called graduation levels. They are level 1 (1D), level 2 (2d) and level 3 (3D).
The level 1 (1D view) is basically, "flat" similar to our coin currency.
The level 2 (2D view) is the raised portions, which include the wording, image or logo.
The level 3 (3D view) is the 3 dimensional views of the image or logo which give detailed accuracy of the image or logo and makes it more realistic.
Both the die casted and die struck processes are used to create the 2 dimensional view. However, in the die struck process, separate cutouts of the images or logos are "glued" on top of each other to create this effect.
In the die casted process the 2D is molded into the metal to give it a gradual smooth 2D view.
For the 3D effect, both process are used, but the same applies to the die struck process, where separate cutouts are made and then "glued" on top of each other for the 3D view. Which gives it a multi-layer, "step-like" look and has a high failure rate. Meaning the "glued" on pieces have a tendency to fall apart.
In the die casted process the 3D image or logo is "hot molded" into the metal to give it a smooth, gradual 3D view, greater accuracy of the image or logo and realism.
Of the two process, die struck and die casted, the die
casted process is well suited for intricate, detailed designs
which require a gradual 2D and 3D view, such as military challenge coins.
The die struck process is well suiteD for simple desgins, one side coins
without 2D or 3D, tokens, lapen pin, badges and jewerly.
